This would be book two in a series about a master-apprentice chain (seen in the circles). The idea is that in each book, the “master” is the previous book’s “apprentice.” I hope we weren’t intended to stick to crime noir and/or bodice-rippers, because this is neither. Perhaps fantasy-horror-crime? I’m not a huge fan of strict genre definitions.

Full disclosure: I will try to cram art nouveau necromancers into everything I possibly can. This was mostly a challenge for me in that I do not usually do line art when working digitally… or I do it as part of a painting, not as a separate layer, and certainly not first! I also used Illustrator, which is still quite a new program to me.

I’ve exported to Photoshop and uploaded a psd here and I’ll leave it there for the duration of the next challenge. Obviously, please don’t remove my logo or signature, but hopefully this will help with whatever we’re doing next. :)

Weekly challenge this week. WIP shots in a second!

Completely traditional using watercolors/watercolor pencils. All I see at this point are errors, but it’s deadline time so OH WELL. First time trying something like this in this medium, and the only reference used was a mirror.

Process posts here and here. I’m not thrilled with what the scanner did to the colors, so the second process post includes photographs.

I learned a lot doing this even if I’m not fully happy with the final. Oddly, I was most worried about the axe and the zombieface and those are the parts I like best.

Two members of a mage order. I actually concepted five of them, but I haven’t had a lot of Photoshop time this week so I had to make due with traditional media during breaks at work.

This is an awesome challenge, by the way, and something I don’t think I would have been able to do well a couple of years ago when I was stuck in post-anime youthful sameface. It was neat to see improvement.

Animation pencil, watercolor pencils, microns, and white gel pen on watercolor paper, minor Photoshop edits to fix some droopy eyes and giant hands.

Grundeer “Spire” mages. I had a dream this wasn’t posted and woke up all upset, haha. I am still working on the concept for this order but I think they’re pretty lax about uniforms unless it’s a formal meeting or something. They’re a very powerful group in this setting and have a monopoly on whatever they are using for red dye, so you only ever see red on mages.
