This is the process of a simple hand-painted tileable texture.
I started by just tossing down a bunch of different browns. I’m not trying to create specific shapes, just to make some variation while avoiding anything that will look weird or obvious when tiled.
I added shadows for cracks and rocks. I sort of start to define shapes here but again, the priority is just making sure it tiles well.
I added highlights on the cracks, edges of the rock-hole-shadows, and along the dirt to define the shape more.
Added rocks!
When I’m doing a tileable texture, I apply an “offset” filter with both directions half  the size of the full image. So in this case, this is a 512x512 texture, so I set the offset filter to 256x256. Once you have applied the filter once, you can do it again with ctrl + f, so I’ll just hit that occasionally while working to make sure I’m covering all portions of the image.
More complicated textures are obviously harder, dirt is about as easy as it gets.

These silly advertisements are part of the backer reward level, requested and described by the backer! They’ll probably have some texture on top of them when actually put into the game to make them fit in with the level better. Consider these the “pretty” versions!

[4:37:42 PM] Kiyome: when did you do the cat advertisement, i missed that one?

[4:40:19 PM] Caspian: that was the second one i did, i like that one best

[4:41:06 PM] Kiyome: fails at making me want to buy cat food, wins at making me want a cat

Here’s another one of the ads. I want to touch this one up a little bit (I’m not happy with the orange cat) but it was pretty fun to paint.

Today on “Things I Never Thought I Would Be Paid To Draw.”
This is a backer reward for Throw Trucks. They pledged high enough to get an entire level, which includes several goofy advertisements along these lines.

These guys were redone. The legs will probably end up thicker than that.

These were honestly probably the most difficult thing I have drawn in ages.

We needed them to be able to collapse, so all those pieces have to fit together in a bunch of different views. I struggled with it and actually ended up making a very fast 3D mockup to make sure I got it right.

Some hypothetical Dancer alternate costumes.

Dancer is my favorite to draw.

These designs require minimal remodeling and keep her silhouette like 99% the same. We’ve had requests for loose pants on her, so I’ll probably do some sketches for that later, but it’ll unfortunately depend on budget and time constraints whether or not we’ll be able to do it.

We are starting to have 3D assets we can show off. Here is a tiny cute octopus, a backer reward!

Here’s what I made yesterday.

I’m still working on refining my workflow. This was modeled in Max and then brought into ZBrush, where I baked normals and did a quick polypaint. I think that I would have better success going from ZBrush to Max than from Max to ZBrush, though.

There’s also some lighting weirdness when I imported to UE3, so I need to sort that out, but it was like midnight so I went to bed instead.

Cats and robots.

For alternate palettes, both the robot and the cat will change colors. This one is based on one of the artist’s cats. The robot suit changed proportions slightly so it will fit in better with the other characters.

Sorcerer King Jeff + all of his props and accessories.

His fingers are really spindly but he’s always got them either curled around the book or is making dramatic claw-hands, so it should look okay.

“Princess” character is getting a redesign. We’re moving towards a modern fairy princess idea instead of the snooty princess shown earlier. She had loose long hair before, then a ponytail so it would work with the wings, and now we’re thinking maybe a braid instead.

Note that the wings are a costume prop and she is not able to fly. :)

All my art this time!

Throw Trucks tumblr is our production blog now, so follow it if you’d like to see production (and pre-production, currently) progress on the game!!
